We often take clean water for granted in today’s modern society. However, not everyone is on a city water grid – many people still rely on wells and filtration for their water at home. There are many different water purification methods to choose from. What method is right for you? We’ll go through each one and help you make a choice.
Reverse-osmosis (RO) Water Purification
A reverse osmosis water system is a water purification process that removes water contamination through a multi-stage treatment process. It uses a semipermeable membrane with tiny pores that trap contaminants while water is forced through the barrier. Unlike most filtration types, reserve osmosis systems do not require thermal energy, instead relying on pressure. This makes it more energy-efficient than other types of purification. A reverse osmosis system can remove nearly all contaminants, and it is significantly more environmentally friendly.
UV Purification
Ultraviolet (UV) purification is a method of water treatment that uses UL light to break down and eliminate water-borne pathogens, greatly reducing the risk of contracting illnesses. This is a cost-effective form of purification that doesn’t change the taste of the water in any way, and the replacement costs are ongoing as lamps and sleeves need to be replaced annually and semi-annually. It has no by-products, no added chemicals, and has no moving parts to wear out.
On the downside, UV water treatment can only remove microorganisms. If there are any other pollutants in the water, such as heavy metal, chlorine, or salt, the filter will not catch them. It’s also only effective on water that’s clear. If you have a well that produces murkier water, the UV light won’t be able to reach the microorganisms.
Activated Carbon Filters
Carbon water filters are the oldest type of water purification filter in existence, going back to the ancient Egyptians who found that water tasted better when stored with charcoal. Carbon filters are very compact units that can filter out bad tastes, odours, and organic chemicals from drinking water. They require little maintenance and can remove organic compounds such as pesticides, herbicides, chlorine, and solvents.
However, carbon filters can’t remove bacteria, viruses, or dissolved solids. You also need to keep up with changing the filter, or else it can become less efficient.
Distillation
Distillation is another one of the oldest methods of purifying water. It helps to remove various water contaminants. Distillation relies on evaporation to purify the water. The water is heated into steam, leaving contaminants behind.
