Is Distilled Water the Best Choice For All Applications?

A glass of distilled water.

If you're the type of person who drinks water straight from the tap, do you ever stop and consider what's actually in that water? As much as a city tries to filter and purify your water, there's always going to be some kind of contaminant. In fact, Canada's overall water quality is still affected by things like industrial effluent and agricultural runoff despite their purification process.

Water distillation is one of the many ways to remove those contaminants and provide clean water. However, you may not know what makes distilled water different than purified water or spring water.

Here's what you should know about distilled water and the best applications for it.

What Is Distilled Water?

Distilled water is a type of purified water that removes things like salts, minerals, and other organic materials. The water distillation process takes something like your tap water and turns it into its purest form.

Water distillers are a type of purification equipment that boil water to create steam. That steam leaves behind any contaminants and then passes through fan-cooled condensing coils. The liquid then passes through a filter before depositing itself into the holding tank.

Distilled Water vs. Purified Water

You may wonder what makes distilled water different than the other kinds of purified water you can buy in your local supermarket. After all, they are both technically "purified".

The main difference is that most purified water is often just filtered to remove larger contaminants. Meanwhile, distilled water should have close to zero contaminants due to the nature of the distillation process.

For example, you can have a special faucet installed to purify the water that comes out of your tap. However, distillation requires heat and specialized equipment.

The only problem is that distilled water lacks some of the taste you may normally expect from purified or straight tap water

Distilled Water Uses

Distilled water can be used for pretty much anything else you'd use normal water for. You can drink it, cook with it, and even water your plants with distilled water.

On top of that, using water that has been distilled is ideal for medical applications. Since it is completely free of contaminants, distilled water is most often used for things like humidifiers and BiPAP machines. In contrast, something like ordinary purified water likely still contains minerals that would cause issues if someone breathed them in.

You can purchase compact distillers for your home that are perfect for small families. Business owners can also purchase commercial models that hold a larger capacity of water.

The Purest Water Around

Distilled water is all-around one of the safest ways to both ingest and use your normal tap water. The process doesn't take that long to finish, and it's one of the best ways to get the purest product. Consider a countertop distiller for your home.
